Code

This website is lovingly (and patiently) handcrafted in HTML 5.2, CSS 3, PHP 8.5, and jQuery 4.0 by Faith and Drew Harkey.

It’s currently hosted on a server in New York, but we hope to transition to our own solar-powered server soon.

Philosophy
The principles guiding us when we built this website

  • The revival of the independent website is the alternative to today’s broken internet.
  • It’s time to reconceptualize the personal website. Make it less about being like a corporate brochure, more about just being (rather than using the reader as a vehicle for monetization, self-validation, or other).
  • Technology should inform and create calm, not incite and distract.
  • Websites are getting heavier. We’re going the opposite direction.
  • Learning HTML is, in the long run, less work than the zero work or no-code website builders that won’t be here in five years. Build for the long web.
  • Stop caring about search engine optimization. Care more about connections.footnote 1
  • The photos are real, the words are human, and the outcome takes effort. No generative AI.footnote 2
  • Web development and research, both, are arete practices. True excellence is elusive and rare, but we always aspire toward it.
Accessibility

Accessibility is very important, and every effort has been made to make this website available to the widest possible audience of researchers. If you personally use a screen-reader or other assistive technology and you experience challenges with this website, please reach out to me and let me know how we can improve.

Privacy and cookies
To make improvements to the website — and to find errors — we use a privacy-aligned analytics tool called Clicky to log and analyze web traffic. We don’t use any other cookies, and do not monitor any cookies from other websites you’ve visited before arriving here. That is to say, we use Clicky in an anonymized way, with no personal data being logged. You may review Clicky’s privacy policy.

Notes.

  1. The artisanal web (also called bespoke web) celebrates diverse and unrelated ideas across a single website (or even across the same page), which is SEO poison. return
  2. The only generative AI in this house is Active Imagination. return
